“And it came about when Samuel was old that he appointed his sons judges over Israel. Now the name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judging in Beersheba. His sons, however, did not walk in his ways, but turned aside after dishonest gain and took bribes and perverted justice.” ~ 1 Samuel 8:1-3 NASB
As I read this passage today, I am struck with the number of times we see this throughout scripture. A godly, God fearing, leader of God’s people lives his faith before his family. Despite their example of loving service, their children fail to follow the path of their fathers.
How does it word it? They “did not walk in his (the parents) ways.” This tells me the parent was successfully following the path God laid out for them, setting an example worthy of a child’s attention, but the child refused.
Moral: Every child must make their own choice. Do your best to show them the way. Cover them in prayer. But like the horse, though you lead them to Living Water, you can’t make them drink. They have to want it for themselves. And they have to want it wholeheartedly.
Father, we long for our children to desire You and walk in Your ways. We cry out to be godly examples. But the fact remains, it’s You alone who draws them. May they hear the Call and willingly follow. In Jesus, amen.
